Samsung SSD Portable

The Samsung portable SSD T1 flash drive was announced at CES in January of this year. Described as durable, stylish, and fast, the T1 portable storage device promises a lot and has a premium price to match. I spent a couple of months with it and think it’s one of those really cool devices everyone will want, but might not be able to justify given the high cost.

USB flash drives are useful for a great many things. One of my favorites is turning them into bootable utility drives. Whenever I get a new version of OS X or Windows, I create bootable USB flash drives so I have hard copies of the OS installer. Another tool I use a lot is Parted Magic, a Linux-based utility. And while you don’t always need high-end flash drives for these purposes, a good one can go a long way to avoiding frustration and wasted time. I took a look at the Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 specifically for use as a bootable drive after I experienced problems trying to create a bootable OS X Mavericks installer.

Mobile device manufacturers still charge a big premium for devices with additional memory. The cost difference between a base iPad Air with 16GB of memory and the 128GB version is a whopping $300. There is, however, no shortage of secondary Wi-Fi storage solutions available. The SanDisk Connect Wireless Flash Drive is one of most portable I’ve seen and is definitely a keeper.
