Speck CandyShell Grip Case for Samsung Galaxy S5
When a new smartphone gets released, you can almost always count on a Speck CandyShell and CandyShell Grip case for it. And that’s a good thing, because they’re both great cases. The CandyShell Grip in particular is one of my favorites.
- Feels good in your hands and is easy to grip
- Meets or exceeds MIL-STD-810G drop test
- Improves usability of buttons
- Easy access to jacks and ports
- Bezel near volume buttons lacks the same rigidity as the rest of the case
The CandyShell Grip has rubber ridges that are easy to grip and feel good to the touch. The rubber covers for the volume and power buttons actually make it easier to press the buttons on the Galaxy S5 than without a case. The charging port cutout lets you slip your fingernail in to open the Galaxy S5’s port cover and plug in the USB cable. The headphone jack had no problems accommodating the various headphones I tried.
Unless you’re habitually unlucky or work in a harsh environment, you probably don’t need a huge rugged case. The CandyShell Grip adds only a small amount of bulk, but still meets MIL-STD-810G drop test standards. Let’s be honest, those slim snap-on cases are cheap and look good, but they’ll only protect your phone from scratches. The CandyShell Grip offers great protection and looks good.
The only problem I’ve found with the CandyShell Grip for the Galaxy S5 is that the bezel directly above the volume buttons don’t have the same stiffness as the rest of the case. I take that back. The bezel above the charging port is also like that. But whereas I almost never touch the bezel above the charging port, I do tend to swipe my fingers across the screen and hit the bezel by the volume buttons. It’s not a big deal, but it just feels strange when you hit it while swiping on the screen.
CONCLUSION: The Speck CandyShell Grip case is a great case for the Samsung Galaxy S5. I’ve used the Grip on the last four phones I’ve had and keep coming back to it whenever I need a new case. It has mil spec drop protection, is easy to hold, and looks attractive. I wish there was a dark blue/navy color, but for now, it’s available in black, white, and green. There are two Target exclusive color combos as well.
Available at Amazon.com for about $30.
