Olloclip 4-in-1 lens

Olloclip 4-in-15 Stars

Olloclip has another trick up its sleeve. Using the same form factor and quality that made its 3-in-1 lens so popular, but adding another macro option and improved optics, Olloclip is looking to one-up itself.

PROS

  • Adds a wide-angle, fisheye and two macro lenses to your iPhone
  • Improved optics produces clearer photos
  • Simple and easy-to-use design
  • Sturdy build

CONS

  • Needs a different carrying solution

With the new lens, Olloclip has introduced better optics, which should lead to clearer pictures for fisheye and wide-angle shots. As for the two remaining lenses, Olloclip has kept the 10x Macro lens and added a 15x macro lens. Accessing either macro lens is just a twist away, with both the fisheye and wide-angle lenses detaching from the base.

The 4-in-1 lens comes with the familiar carrying bag, and revised lens caps. The previous caps were prone to falling off and getting lost, where as the new ones are a tighter fit and seem to travel down the lens a bit more, allowing them to remain in place.

As for picture quality, I’ve noticed a difference with the improved optics on my iPhone 5S. The option to back out a bit on a macro shot using the 10x zoom lens with an 18mm focus distance (compared to 12mm-15mm on the previous model) provides for better contrast and more light in photos. And for the tighter shots, where getting really close is warranted, having the 15x zoom with a 12mm focal point does the job perfectly.

I still wish Olloclip would figure out a better method to carry the lenses. The small bags that double as a lens cleaner are convenient, but I find the drawstring doesn’t always stay shut and I end up digging the lens out of my backpack or pocket. On top of that, carrying around the 4-in-1 along with the telephoto lens is a bulky, drawstring-filled mess.

It’s nice to see Olloclip still working hard on creating products to accompany the camera that happens to be in one of the most popular smartphones. They could easily sit back and let Apple keep innovating the optics in the iPhone, improving the camera while also improving the end result when their product is used. Instead Patrick O’Neill and team aren’t satisfied with letting someone else do the hard work. The improved optics paired with new macro features make the 4-in-1 Olloclip the lens attachment to have for the iPhone.

Olloclip has announced it will start shipping a new 4-in-1 lens for iOS devices next month. The lens –– priced at the same $69 price point as the previous 3-in-1 lens –– is available for preorder on Olloclip.com.
