Timbuk2 Informant Camera Sling (Small)
Depending on how much you use your DSLR, you probably have more than one bag or case for it. If you want to carry several lenses, a tripod, multiple bodies, large flashes, and more, you probably have a large backpack, or perhaps the Timbuk2 Snoop messenger. But what about when you want to carry just a couple of lenses and a single body? Do you bring the large backpack with you? Probably not, right? The Timbuk2 Informant camera sling is a miniature camera messenger bag, complete with padded, customizable walls and a waterproof rain cover. Foregoing the typical camera bag appearance, it protects your gear in style without sacrificing function. It’s currently my preferred camera bag for everyday use.

DESIGN & FEATURES
The Informant comes in two sizes: small and medium. Timbuk2 graciously sent me a sample of the small Informant, so this review will focus primarily on that version. The small version has 336 cubic inches of volume and can fit a small tablet, like a Kindle Fire HD. On the outside, the Informant looks like a miniature Timbuk2 messenger bag and not at all like a camera bag.
The front flap is secured by two strips of velcro and opens up to reveal a thin pocket with pen and card slots. It’s not a large amount of space, but you can store things like a Lenspen, a small manual, or microfiber cloths.
The main compartment is zippered and opens on the body-side, meaning when you’re wearing the Informant, the flap opens away from you, not toward you like a normal messenger bag. This is a great feature for keeping the flap out of the way and your gear close by so you don’t drop anything while fumbling with the flap. It also makes it harder for thieves to grab your stuff without you noticing.
The main compartment has very good padding with customizable walls. It can be configured for a DSLR body with medium lens attached and two additional lenses. I can fit my Canon T2i body with 18-55mm lens attached, a 50mm fixed lens, small flash, charger, and a large BlackRapid RS-7 strap. I don’t usually carry my 55-250mm lens with me, but I can carry it in the Informant too, as long as I remove the BlackRapid strap.
The dedicated internal pocket is just large enough for a smaller tablet, like a Kindle Fire HD. The medium version can fit an 11-inch MacBook Air or a full-sized iPad.
The flap has two zippered mesh pockets for memory cards, spare batteries, remotes, etc.
The back of the Informant has a small zippered pocket that stores the waterproof rain cover. The Informant by itself is probably safe in a drizzle for a short period of time, but if you’re caught in a downpour, the rain cover will be crucial.
The Timbuk2 Informant is an excellent small camera messenger bag that doesn’t look like a camera bag. But like a good camera bag, it offers great protection for your DLSR and lenses. The small size of the Informant makes it ideal for carrying a DSLR body and a couple of lenses, allowing you to leave your larger backpack or Timbuk2 Snoop at home. If you’re looking for a stylish, well-built, everyday-carry type of camera bag, the Timbuk2 Informant might be just what you’re looking for.
